Ever consider all the scientific work that goes into making your favourite bag of chips? On this episode of Pathways by GrenSTEAM, Sydney chats with Arlene about the intricacies of food science and its applications, her struggles finding a job in the US as an international student and shares some thoughts about why locally produced foods might be so darn expensive.

Sydney Robertson is a Certified Food Scientist from Grenada currently working at a plant-based food startup in New York. She graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry and a Master’s Degree in Food Safety and Technology. After leaving college, she landed a job as a quality control technician and has moved through different roles within the food space in the last 2 years.
She currently works as a Senior Culinary Research and Development Associate where she focuses on recipe development for direct to consumer products, recipe optimization, shelf life studies, various validation studies and more. Having recently attained her CFS designation (Certified Food Scientist) from the Institute of Food Technologists, Sydney hopes to continue to grow within her food career exploring multiple facets of the industry.
